Bureau of Indian Standard(BIS)
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) earlier known as Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY) initiated Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) through a gazette order during end of 2012 and started adding multiple products under Compulsory registration order (CRO).
Under this program of CRO, it is mandatory for the manufacturers to have a Registration Number from BIS by testing their products (covered under the scheme) at BIS recognized labs, get a compliance test report, complete the mandatory documentation to avail the registration number.
Product Label should hold a standard mark on the product + packaging. A registration number will be allotted by BIS mainly to the manufacturer and not to the brand owner/importer.
Market surveillance is implemented by MeitY on its own and has appointed Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) to conduct surveillance.
